It might stand to reason that Maria and Alucard are simply late arrivals.
The way Maria behaves it is as though she had just arrived.
She may have awoken in the middle of the night, having lived with her sister and brother in law, to find Annette in a panic that Richter had left.
Without warning, Annette shrieks and Maria discovers the Castle Dracula has reemerged.
Having worked on a couple titles I recognize that the less additional work required the better. But if you are trying to put in some polish with the best reward per hour worked, I might suggest sealing off areas of the castle with generic destructible or impassible walls to narrow the scope of the level design.
And placing the confrontation with Death in Dracula's throne room for a little exposition between Richter and another character.
Richter might be confused.
Death: Our honored guest has arrived....
Richter: Where is your master? I didn't realize underlings were allowed in the throne room.
Death: *hisses and cackles* still haven't figured it out yet? I am making room for a new "lord." One who will submit to the will of our great master.
Richter: I don't have time for your riddles. Let's end this.
Richter: You've lost old one...
Death: Your destiny is yet unfulfilled Belmont... beyond the throne your true fate awaits.
But can you face it?
Death: For a being such as I... these wounds amount to nothing but sleep. We will meet again.
Using impassable or breakable walls you could lead the player in a different path best suited for the narrative you wish to tell.
In my mind this sort of dream you have in mind might be from theresultant fog surrounding the castle. In history, fog has been used for supernatural effect. Since it is used as an overlay in the "Outerwall" area you could use it in areas where it makes the biggest impact and have Richter monologue about his worsening condition.
Richter: Fog!? I can barely see anything!
-- screen flashes use sprite details for an arena composed of the inverted clock towers sprites, recolor the hair of the sucubus. This character could be Anette.--
Annette: My dearest Richter... come closer.
Richter: Annette! This can't be real!
Annette: No... not yet. You will fail us husband...
Richter: I promise you I will not let this happen... whatever appirition this is, I will never forgive you.
Annette: Come Vampire Killer. Kill your beloved, such as it is... such as it will be...
Annette: Such is the way of things to come... goodbye my beloved vampire killer....
Screen flashes Richter wakes up in a new location and continues onward
Richter might have moments throughout where he says the odd couple lines in different sections explaining is worsening mental condition. Until he arrives at Shaft.
Richter: You again!? But how? This must be another illusion...
Shaft: It is no illusion. With the master gone, I found my soul trapped within the confines of the demon castle here.
I was reborn. Without a purpose... languishing in the darkness.
Shaft: Come now hunter... surely you can see the irony. Your adventure ended with the death of Dracula.
We are not so different, you and I.
Richter: I will not let you win.
Shaft: I have already won Belmont. You just haven't seen it yet. We both still play a small part in the legend of Count Dracula.
Let the grand festival begin!
The shaft battle occurs. It is no different from before. Except instead of a death animation, He cracks from his casing.
Using Rondo sprites from the apparition of Shaft, he raises up and an orb produces in the centre of the screen. He burns up.
The orb fades. And the entire screen is black.
Richter: It's over.
(the possessed character icon of Richter appears and the remodelled sprite from the Saturn version appears opposite.)
Doppleganger: You know it can never be over.
Richter: Another spirit?
Doppleganger: I am the truth of what you know in your heart. This war will never end. It is best for you to stay here. And await the day that Dracula returns.
Lord over his domain. Crush trespassers. And when that vampire shows his bloody face... end him once more.
Richter: Get out of my head!
Doppleganger: You've won! Take your place on the throne and never let the spirit of this castle wander into the world beyond its walls. It is the only way to protect Annette and Maria.
Richter: No! This battle ends today! This land is free of that monster and I will play party to your games no longer!
Richter: Very well tjen, let the internal struggle continue Belmont.
The screen fades into the throne room. The battle plays out with Doppleganger Richter utilizing a smaller moveset. For balance reasons. Maybe give him the flame whip.
Richter: Return to the castle from where you came monster.
Doppleganger: No... this cannot be! You were supposed to change!
(At this point the castle begins to rumble. Some background effects might flicker or there might be an earthquake effect. To represent the castle fading.
Since Maria has two different attack patterns from two different versions of the game, one might be used for a boss battle with Richter reusing the lines from the game that were exised.)
Maria: No! Don't harm Richter anymore!
Doppleganger: Maria! You saved me! If not for you I would have lost to this fool.
(I don't recall word for word this ending. But I am sure you are aware of it. And the battle might play out similarly to how it does in the Curse Zone.)
after the battle
Richter: Maria... I'm- I'm sorry.(These words ecist elsewhere in the scripted dialogue. So if you choose to have voicing at least the ending could be narrated.)
Richter collapses. using a few frames of animation Maria's sprite changes into the Succubus and the screen fades to black with the ending music coming up. Maybe there is some image of Alucard waking up in post credit but, I don't think it is necessary.
This was all written in one go with no previous thought. So I don't know how well it lands here. But I think it could be a satisfying way to bridge Richter, Maria and Alucard's stories together.
I kind of like the idea of the Succubus and Shaft working together. As much as she is merely an underling she is a big part of the reason Alucard discovers the inverted castle. She is also a demon that is involved in dreams. So for her to be playing the roles of Annette, Maria and the Doppleganger fits perfectly well without jarring what has occured.
I also thought it might lend some credibility to a fight with the Castlevania 3 characters as long as they don't die. (Well I guess they could... they are zombies after all.)
